While on Facebook one day recently, I wrote this in response to a Facebook post of this article: https://www.smh.com.au/world/europe/biggest-failure-in-a-generation-where-did-britain-go-wrong-20200428-p54o2d.html?fbclid=IwAR2AJ6clFienXBZpFPVaBPtR0Nw6HIWdj116xWmQdBQdJhiMCqe48HMINi4
It’s true. We all mock Rump’s (this is my name for President Trump) response - rather, non-response - to the Covid-19 crises, but to be fair, Britain and Canada were no better. Honestly, I don’t know about other European countries who failed as badly as these big three in mishandling the Covid-19 crises when we all had fair warning from Italy. Not to mention fair warning from plain old Common Sense.
When you see the world around you being devastated by a new, rapidly-spreading virus and you don’t take immediate action to 1) close your borders and 2) arm your frontline health care workers with the protection equipment they will need, it’s criminal. It should be likened to Hitler trying to annihilate Jews during the Second World War and the world standing by. Or like the civil war in Rwanda when Hutus and Tutsis fought to the death, essentially over which one was supreme while the world did nothing to help. Well, except for Romeo D’Allaire, a Canadian Military General (I think that was his rank) who tried to get the world to wake up. When those in power do not protect those who elected them to that power, it should be considered a crime. And too little, too late should fall into that category. At least, I think so.
Border closings, PPE for front line personnel, school closures, lockdowns were all implemented too late. It makes me grateful to live in a much less populated province. At least we are not like the cities that have 1,000,000 million - Ottawa - to 13,000,000 - Los Angeles and area, if my information is right on that population. At least here we have room to breathe, although, yes, we must still practice safe measures and self-isolation. And God bless those front-line workers of all stripes.
As one of the many, many people considered high-risk, it galls me to think our government dragged its feet because they either didn’t take the warnings seriously or through sheer arrogance. This is NOT what they were elected to do. Yes, I do understand the economy is important, really I do. But how do you reconcile failure to protect your country’s health just to make a buck?
New Zealand and Australia both slammed the doors shut early and have avoided the worst of the virus and its impact in this countries. Well, you say, they’re islands! It’s so easy for them. Baloney! Yes, they are islands. But they are penetrable, just like our countries. Hey, Britain is an island, and they didn’t do so well, did they?
I hope and pray the world survives Covid-19 without too much more of the serious issues and deaths attributed to it at this time, but, my heart cries that this will not be the case. We will all have to wait and see.
So everyone, do your best to stay safe and healthy. And shop locally whenever you can, if you can. We all need to do our part.
